Day Hike

Spruce Knob is perched high atop West Virginia’s Monongahela National Forest, a 1.7m acre wonderland of rolling hills and massive spruce trees. I visited Spruce Knob in late 2016 as part of a road trip to collect the MD, PA, and WV state highpoints.

Monongahela National Forest offers a wide variety of hiking and camping options. We spend the night right near the highpoint at the Spruce Knob Lake Campground, a quiet and basic campground with some of the darkest skies on the East Coast. After an evening of campfire food and good rest, we awoke and summitted the foggy, cool highpoint.
